Actually Means<\/h2>\n<p>So if tap water straight from the faucet is out, what&#8217;s in?<br \/>\nAccording to the FDA and CDC, you have a few solid options \u2014 you only need one of them.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Distilled or sterile water<\/strong> \u2014 the store-bought kind labeled &#8220;distilled&#8221; or &#8220;sterile.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Boiled and cooled water<\/strong> \u2014 bring tap water to a rolling boil for 1 minute (3 minutes if you&#8217;re above roughly 6,500 feet \/ 1,980 meters), then let it cool to lukewarm before use.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Filtered water<\/strong> \u2014 through a filter specifically labeled &#8220;NSF 53&#8221; or &#8220;NSF 58,&#8221; or one stating an absolute pore size of 1 micron or smaller.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Any one of these removes the amoebae and organisms that plain tap water can carry.<br \/>\nNone of them are complicated.<br \/>\nThe boiling method, in particular, costs nothing and takes one minute \u2014 which makes the &#8220;I didn&#8217;t have time&#8221; It isn&#8217;t.<\/p>\n<p>While you rinse, keeping your mouth open and making a sustained sound \u2014 &#8220;ahh,&#8221; or holding an &#8220;ng&#8221;\/&#8221;k&#8221; as in &#8220;hung&#8221; \u2014 raises and closes the soft palate at the back of your throat.<br \/>\nThat keeps the solution from running down your throat, and it also helps keep it away from the Eustachian tubes that connect your nose to your middle ear.<\/p>\n<p>That second part matters more than it sounds.<br \/>\nIt&#8217;s the main thing standing between a normal rinse and fluid ending up somewhere it shouldn&#8217;t \u2014 your middle ear.<\/p>\n<p>Interestingly, sources don&#8217;t fully agree on which exact sound works best.<br \/>\nSome say &#8220;ahh,&#8221; others say &#8220;k&#8221; or &#8220;ng,&#8221; others say &#8220;eee.&#8221;<br \/>\nThe goal is the same regardless \u2014 raise and close that soft palate \u2014 so whichever sound does that for you is the right one.<\/p>\n<h2>Technique, Step by Step<\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Step-by-step nasal irrigation technique: lean forward, place the spout in the upper nostril, make an &quot;ahh&quot; sound at low pressure, let solution run out the lower nostril, blow gently, then clean and dry the device\" src=\"https:\/\/wewellinfo.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/body-4-50.png\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>During the rinse<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>Lean forward over a sink and tilt your head slightly to one side. Don&#8217;t tip your head far back \u2014 that&#8217;s what lets solution run toward your ears instead of out your nose.<\/li>\n<li>Gently place the spout in your upper nostril. Don&#8217;t insert it deeply or force a seal; that can irritate or injure the mucosa.<\/li>\n<li>Keep your mouth open, make your &#8220;ahh&#8221; sound, and let the solution flow slowly, at low pressure. It should run out the lower nostril within a few seconds.<\/li>\n<li>Repeat on the other side.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3>Finishing up<\/h3>\n<ol start=\"5\">\n<li>Lean forward and gently blow your nose \u2014 one nostril at a time, softly \u2014 to clear the remaining solution. Blowing hard can push fluid toward your ears instead of out.<\/li>\n<li>Move your head side to side and forward to let any trapped solution drain out naturally.<\/li>\n<li>Wash the device after every use, following the manufacturer&#8217;s instructions, and let it air-dry completely before you put it away. More isn&#8217;t automatically better \u2014 over-rinsing can strip the protective mucus your nose actually needs.<\/p>\n<h3>When to Get Care Right Away<\/h3>\n<p>Two different urgency levels are worth knowing.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Go to the ER immediately<\/strong> if, after rinsing, you develop a headache, fever, confusion, vomiting, seizures, or a stiff neck. These are extremely rare, but they&#8217;re the warning signs associated with amoebic infection, and this is not a &#8220;wait and see&#8221; situation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>See a clinician<\/strong> for severe or persistent ear pain, a high fever, foul-smelling ear drainage, sudden hearing loss, or dizziness that doesn&#8217;t go away. These point toward middle-ear involvement or an infection that needs to be checked.<\/p>\n<h2>Where This Leaves Me<\/h2>\n<p>I still use a neti pot most mornings during allergy season.
